Why ever did Chanel discontinue their Pro Lumiere foundation and the new foundation they have brought out instead: Perfection Lumiere | Chanel Foundation Breakdown and Review Series - Part 1

Why on earth did Chanel discontinue their Pro Lumiere foundation?! I just found a sample sized prolumiere pot in my makeup stash and I'm really quite upset that I don't own a full sized bottle! I've always had an on and off relationship with this particular foundation in the past but today I've fallen in love with it. I've always had super dry skin so I have to be extra careful to pick out a foundation that won't accentuate any dryness. Recently though, something weird happened to my skin and it's not dry anymore (it's borderline oily now) and I think it's because I started using Creme de le Mer moisturiser (that's pretty much the most expensive face potion that's come in contact with my face ever since I've lived - fyi - it's almost a £100 - review coming up soon)!

CHANEL PRO LUMIERE (discontinued):

In my drier skin days whenever I used Pro Lumiere it would look slightly cakey on me regardless of how I tried to apply it so Vitalumiere has always been my go to foundation. However, I always did love how Pro Lumiere literally made my skin glow (when looked at from afar, nearby you could see all the dry patches). I also know (not personally) loads of makeup artists use Pro Lumiere on celebrities (Anne Hathaway is wearing Pro Lumiere in the picture below, she's also wearing one of the Chanel Illusion d'Ombre eyeshadows in mirfique) for red carpet events and it looks absolute stunning & I got a pretty good result when I used it today. I think this foundation responds kindly to people with non-dry skin types. I also think that it wouldn't work for someone with excessively oily skin without a primer.

Anne Hathaway wearing Chanel Pro Lumiere foundation
  • The finish is dewy, natural and super luminous (in the best way possible, hence the name PRO Lumiere!
  • The coverage is medium
  • It feels like I'm not really wearing anything on my face
  • Best suited for non-dry skin types
  • Long lasting

It pretty much looks like I have amazing skin and I just took a couple of pictures of my self with heavy flash and everything looks A-Okay! I've set my t-zone with the Vitalumiere Eclat Comfort Radiance Compact because I felt as the day would progress it would prevent excessive shine in that area. The powder actually melted like butter on top of this foundation and doesn't feel like powder at all. Rather, it feels like soft velvety skin.

I honestly don't understand why Chanel discounted this foundation because I know so many people who love this and now I do too. I've just done a quick scan on the internet and I can't find it anywhere but maybe they'll still have some left over in the stores?

CHANEL PERFECTION LUMIERE FOUNDATION:

To replace Pro Lumiere Chanel has brought out Perfection Lumiere which I haven't tried out yet so I can't say much about it except for the fact that it has very mixed reviews online. The USP of Perfection Lumiere is that it comes in a wider shade selection catering for pink based, yellow based and neutral skin tones. This is the foundation all the models were wearing in the Spring/Summer 2012 show (the one where we saw a sneak peak of all of next seasons nail polishes, click here to see that blog post) and their skin looked PERFECT. I must warn you though that when Chanel hired the models for the runway show one of their top criteria was good skin, really really good skin.

Did you love Pro Lumiere foundation too or are you glad it's gone?
Have you tried Perfection Lumiere? What are your thoughts?

Stay tuned for Part 2 in the Chanel Foundation Breakdown & Review Series featuring my holy grail foundation for dry skin.

  2. Hey! Just to answer your question on my blog. I have a combination skin - normal with really dry patches on my cheeks and a bit oily T-zone. The Chanel's Vitalumiere Aqua works perfect for me.

  5. I haven't tried either of those, but I have heard good things about perfection lumiere so I might give it a try. I use Vitalumiere aqua and I do really like it. Recently my skin went a bit crazy and I had awful dry patches on my cheeks and the foundation faired pretty well with it I thought!

    1. I always thought vitalumiere aqua would be unsuitable for someone with dry skin like me but i'll give it a try now. I've got a friend with normal to oily skin and vitalumiere aqua looks beautiful on her. However, she does have beautiful skin already!! But the foundation looks amazing on her, makes her skin glow and looks completely imperceptible on her skin!

  6. I've used Pro Lumiere for about 8 years and i'm so angry and dissapointed that they have discontinued it. I have tried so many different foundations (and spent a small fortune!) over the years before I discovered this one and realised that nothing compares to it for it's smooth and perfectly balanced coverage. Back to searching for the perfect foundation again....

    2. absolutely feel the same.. very annoyed they discontinued and will probably end up changing brands.. the perfection lumiere just is not the same

    3. I completely understand. This was the only foundation that hid my pores and didn't cause breakouts. The replacement foundation "perfection lumiere" is not even close to as wonderful and already a week into using it I've broken out!!! very frusterating

    4. I loved pro lumiere and was gutted when they brought in perfection lumiere which i have tried but do not like. I have started using lift lumiere which is the best i can find but no match to the pro! - Vicky

    5. Hello i also love pro in beige but i have found that chantecaille future skin in sand is fab for dry skin, give it a go!!

    6. I went back to Clinique when Chanel discontinued Pro Lumiere, loved their new matte foundation - but broke out! Now bought Perfection Lumiere - and broke out again! (And I'm much too old to have spots!) Not happy. Need to find a replacement very soon.

    7. I can totally understand how you all must feel! I've travelled quite a bit in the past few months and I made it my mission to stop over at every airport duty free or any makeup counter in the city to check if they would possibly have a left over bottle of prolumiere somewhere hidden away in the stick room. Or perhaps an old tester bottle that I could buy but unfortunately I didn't find it anywhere!! Apparently, when they discontinue something they pull it off their shelves completely! sigh!!

    8. I agree!!! The pro lumiere was my colour EXACTLY - which happens once in a blue moon...plus the way it went on my skin was fab...the same colour in Vitalumiere is NOT the same colour, grrr!!! I've heard mixed reviews about the Vitalumiere Aqua:lots are disappointed, some are happy..
So, whats the answer?? Well for me it was to lose my loyalty to Chanel(sorry)& jump ship to go with MUFE(Make Up For Ever)Face & Body Liquid Foundation. I couldn't be happier & I saved money at the same time!

    9. I am so upset too. I have finally decided i just have to pay the money as it was a perfect foundation and its gone!

    10. I also was devoted to pro lumiere and a similar story as above, it was the perfect colour and consistency and I got lots of compliments, i even looked younger and didnt feel like I needed so much makeup. They then discontinued it and I got the perfection lumiere. It does not compare. Its dry and cakey. I had to spend ages finding the right colour because I could not use the same colour as before. I dont think the colour is a perfect match. I cannot blend it as well and find I have to use a lot more product so maybe that was Chanels plan to make us buy more. I wont be buying it again when its finished and I will probably try a different brand which is sad because I have a lot of other Chanel makeup products.

    2. I am so sad, angry and disappointed with Chanel for discontinuing such a good Foundation as Pro Lumiere. It gave such good coverage as well. All the other foundations that Chanel does, cannot match Pro lumiere. Please, please Chanel bring back Pro lumiere quick!

  8. i just found out the pro luminere was discontinued a week ago from a makeup artist at another store and ran to a chanel counter for confirmation. IM SO SAD!!!!!!!! I have been using the product for many years now and have no idea where to start when looking for a new replacement :( i have tried the vitaluminere before and found it didnt have as much coverage as the pro. the so called "new" replacement felt thick when the chanel artist let me sample it....but maybe i really should give it a proper try. Either that or stock up on a truck full of the pro...but something tells me that foundation expires at some point in time! The good stuff is always discontinued...very disappointed :(

    1. I totally feel your pain!! I think vitalumiere is a beautiful foundation but it doesn't provide as much coverage as pro like you've mentioned. However, if someone has really good skin which is slightly dry vitalumiere fairs much better on them. The trick is to let the foundation sink in to the skin for a good few minutes and then gently powder over the top! It gives a very beautiful glowy finish!

  9. I am also so disappointed Pro Lumiere is discontinued.I was just getting to the end of my first bottle and was receiving great compliments about my skin which I knew was the pro lumiere. The replacement product colours are so different and not suitable for me at all Where can I get some old stock?

    2. I checked out ebay, amazon, pretty much every where on the internet, there are about 2 bottles I spotted a while ago and they were £120+. That's just extortionate!! I think I'd pick it up if it were around the £50-£60 mark but not anymore!!

  10. I am crushed that they discontinued Pro Lumiere. I cannot find anything to replace it. In my opinion the Perfection Lumiere is awful. Someone has one bottle of Pro Lumiere on Amazon for $194.00.. argghhhhh

  11. Hi from France
I used Pro lumiere since 2010 and it was actually better than Perfection lumiere, wich I use for the moment..It's also a good fond de teint (my skin is too dry), but anyway, Pro Lumiere gave a better result than Perfection lumiere.

    1. I absolutely agree, perfection lumiere is a nice foundation but it's more on the matte side and works better with people who already have good skin. Perhaps a super glowy primer underneath could give results close to pro lumiere?! x

  12. Has anyone found a foundation as good as pro lumiere ? I have tried lift by Chanel but its no way as good! Shame on Chanel for discontinuing such an amazing product. The replacement is very matt and Cakey ! It took me a long time to find such a fabulous product !! Can anyone provide any suggestions for comparable foundations ?

    1. I tried lift a little while ago and although it seems at first it'll be like pro lumiere because of it's creamy texture it actually feels quite thick on the skin and can look a but cakey if it isn't applied sheerly! I think you should deff check out the vitalumiere aqua compact foundation, I think it's the next best thing after pro lumiere! x

    2. how about MUFE Face & Body Foundation or MUFE HD Foundation??

  13. Welcome to the club! I am make up artist myself and pro lumiere has been my chosen foundation for about 5 years.
I love it for photoshoots as well, it photographs amazingly well.
    SIGH.
I bought perfection lumiere, hoping for the best but i don't like it at all. it has a cheap smell, is very mat, sets very quickly and sits on top of dry skin. At the same time not enough coverage.

Did anyone came across a foundation that is close to pro lumiere?

    1. Oh no! I feel your pain! I don't know why they discontinued it. It was a staple in a lot of celebrity makeup artist kits!! Do you have any left in your kit or has it all run out now?

I haven't really found a substitute yet but the closest I've come to it is the vitalumiere aqua compact foundation. It leaves a beautiful glow to the skin but it kind of clings on to dry patches a bit. I think it's the closest chanel foundation to pro lumiere! x

  14. I am a beauty advisor and I loved pro lumiere as you all said your skin glows and photos are flawless. My advice and what Ive been doing, mixing a bit of matte lumiere with vita lumiere. Just a squirt or two of each. About as close as you will get. :) hope that's helpful girls

  17. Can we start a campaign for Chanel to bring back the pro lumiere (Please!) Why did they stop production.....?

  18. I thought I was the only one who missed the Pro-Lumiere. I've tried every brand and Chanel's replacements, none of which are the same. And I agree that the colors are just not the same. One that comes a little bit close is, believe it or not, Clinique's Extra Moisture Foundation.

  19. So so soooo bloody angry with chanel I miss pro so much! Why oh why would you discontinue such an amazing foundation when clearly it has many fans BAD move chanel any loyalty I had has gone!

  20. Only found out today that Chanel have discontinued their WONDERFUL Pro-Lumiere.... :-( I was given it as a gift and loved it from the first time I applied it. Running out very quickly, so may have to use it even more sparingly than I do now. Will treat it as gold dust.
    Bad move Chanel !!

  21. They discontinued Pro Lumiere together with Mat Lumiere. I was using Mat Lumiere and have used several bottles. I started using Perfection Lumiere since I was left with no choice and I started to breakout halfway through the bottle. I bought the Le Blanc foundation and it broke me out at first use. I stopped using Chanel totally now and switched to Dior Capture Totale and it is awesome!.

  23. I agree with everyone else....totally devastated that Chanel discontinued Pro Lumiere. I managed to purchase about 15 bottles, but I am now down to 3. I have been trying many different foundations trying to find a replacement but to no rel success. I have not found anything that compares. I keep hoping that Chanel will come to it's senses and reinstate Pro Lumiere. I tried the Perfection Lumiere but found it very yellow, dry and it seemed to separate on my face and not giving a good coverage like Pro Lumiere did.

  24. I too miss Pro lumiere very much indeed it gave the skin a perfect flawless look with just the right amount of dewyness! Photographs exceptionally too! Very upset I still ask for it at the Chanel counters! I changed to lift but now they have taken away my colour in that so now I'm using vitalumier. I have used Georgio Armani silk foundation which is Verygood but nothing as good as pro lumiere. :-(
