Are your hands giving away your age? Do they look old and wrinkly?! Want to know what you might be doing to cause it?

How do you wash your dishes? Do you hand wash them? If you do, you might be ageing your hands very rapidly!

Dishwashing liquids are very harsh on the hands. Just imagine, if they can wash off the grease from your dirty pots and pans within minutes how stripping they must be for your hands!!

Some people might already know this but it was news to me last year when my friend told me that she never goes near the kitchen sink without her gloves. Exposing your skin to dishwashing liquid on a regular basis causes premature wrinkles and it can look like you have the same hands as your 80 year old grandma!

There's nothing wrong with wrinkles, it's a natural part of life as you age BUT if you take little steps like wearing gloves while you wash the dishes you won't accelerate the normal process of ageing.

Obviously having your skin come in contact with harsh products is only one of the many reasons your hands could age. One other really big factor is not using sunscreen on your hands while you drive! So I'd suggest you keep a tiny bottle of sunscreen in your car as well! Some companies makeup special hand sunscreens and you can also buy hand creams with SPF in them.

I've seen loads of women in their 30's and 40's who are absolutely gorgeous and look like they're 20 BUT if you were to look at their hands you could instantly tell their real age!

People often overlook their hands while they take care of their faces, after all, it is the first thing you see when you look in the mirror so it's only natural to worry about it more. However, we mustn't forget our hands and take care of them because neglecting them means giving away how old you really are regardless of how flawless your face is!

So this is what you must do...

BUY GLOVES, loads and loads of dishwashing gloves:

Wash your dishes with the gloves on, NEVER without! This also applies while you're doing any other cleaning! Keep the harsh chemicals and moisture stripping products away!

Keep a good quality hand wash and lotion next to your kitchen sink! How many times have you or someone in your house used the dishwashing liquid sitting next to the kitchen sink to wash their hands after dinner instead of going to the bathroom?! I know I have! So, at my house I keep a separate hand wash and lotion next to the kitchen sink so I don't have to resort to washing my hands with the dishwashing liquid!

Hopefully, making these tiny little changes will make a big difference in the way your hands will look in the long run! It's the same idea as your face really. You wouldn't just get facials every now and then and not follow a proper skin care routine on a daily basis, right? In the same way, if you like to spend money on getting manicures or lotions and potions for your paws there's no point undoing all the good from it by exposing your hands to harsh dishwashing liquids and the sun's rays while driving on a daily basis!

Tell me...

Do you already do all of these things to take care of your hands?
If not, do you think you'll implement these steps?
What are your best tips for taking care of your hands?

  1. The hands really do show the age more than the face sometimes. I am constantly moisturising my hands and have to be really careful about highly fragranced and drying soaps and cleaning products. They really irritate my skin and I end up with cracked knuckles - not pretty!

  2. It absolutely is lovely =)
I use duo fiber brushes for blush and bronzer.
With them it's easy to apply sheer and build up to the colour you want. And they don't pick upp too much colour from the pan so you actually save some product that way =) At least that's what I've experienced =)

  3. I don't wash dishes. hahah So I don't need to worry about that but you are correct about your hand being stripped away of its youth by dish washing liquid. Anyway great post. You should also do one on how not to neglect your neck while moisturizing. Many people forget that it exists which leads to premature aging and saggy lines runny across the neck.

  5. @blog-a-beauté - Too much alcohol is defenately bad for the skin but when you use it the right way it's actually ok. As I wrote, this particular toner helped me get my skin to a point where I could use another toner without alcohol. I think when you use a toner with alcohol it's really important to use a good moisturizer. Cuz' that's really the bad thing about alcohol, it dries out the skin.

And depending on what problems you have with your skin it can be good or bad =)

  6. From a young age my grandmother always told me to not wash the dishes without gloves and I didn't listen to her! That's until recently my mum scared me into using them because they'd make my hands go all dry and wrinkly so I HAVE to use them when I'm cleaning the dishes or cleaning my bathroom with bleach and bathroom sprays. Otherwise my hands break into a rash at times so looking after your hands is a definite must. Great post Abeer :)
